Latin American and Caribbean Network of BiodiverCities

8:00-10:00 am

  • Grand Hyatt Denver (Pinnacle Club), 1750 Welton St, Denver, CO 80202

  • CAF – Development Bank of Latin America and Inter-American Dialogue

  • Eighty-one percent of the Latin American and Caribbean population lives in cities, and the region accounts for 60 percent of the planet’s biodiversity. This combination presents an important opportunity for sustainable urban development based on natural capital, but also entails significant responsibility in the management and protection of these resources. The process of increased urbanization in the Americas has been one of the main drivers of biodiversity loss – it is estimated that up to 44 percent of the regional GDP is at risk due to this reality. Understanding this challenge, Latin America and the Caribbean have been leading many initiatives that seek to reverse this loss. BiodiverCities are cities that seek to restore the balance between urban planning and nature by increasing green infrastructure, improving governance schemes to promote nature-based solutions, generating positive links between the rural and the urban for improved biodiversity conservation, prioritizing circular economy models, and promoting these values among citizens.

President & CEO of the Inter-American Dialogue Rebecca Bill Chavez, Executive President of CAF – Development Bank of Latin America Sergio Diaz-Granados, and the Mayor of Denver, Colorado Michael Hancock will provide opening remarks to contextualize the upcoming sessions and build on the success of the Mayors Summit held on the margins of the IX Summit of the Americas.

In the following 90-minute session, CAF – Development Bank of Latin America and the Inter-American Dialogue will facilitate two high-level discussions amongst key stakeholders, experts, and local decision-makers, followed by a keynote conversation.

Women’s Economic Empowerment & the Digital Transformation

10:00-11:30 am

  • Grand Hyatt Denver (Pinnacle Club), 1750 Welton St, Denver, CO 80202

  • CAF – Development Bank of Latin America and Inter-American Dialogue

  • Over the next decade, productivity gains from adopting digital technologies are projected to generate 70 percent of new value creation in the global economy. Despite calls for an inclusive recovery, women across the hemisphere are being left behind, in large part due to limited access to the digital economy. Mayors and other local leaders have demonstrated that they are uniquely positioned to transform a structure of discrimination and exclusion into one that empowers women. As key players in the digital transformation, local decision-makers across the hemisphere are moving key city and social services online, combatting predatory online practices, and implementing creative online programs for financial inclusion. Subnational actors are leading on digital capacity building programs to increase women’s workforce marketability and create a foundation for online entrepreneurship. Cities are also directly providing equipment and broadband services to their citizens, increasing internet access for the most marginalized.

By leveraging the Inter-American Dialogue and CAF – Development Bank of Latin America’s ongoing work on both gender and cities, this 90-minute working session will engage mayors, civil society leaders, private sector representatives, and other key stakeholders from across the hemisphere to build consensus and collaboration for effective advocacy, policies, and programs that promote women’s economic empowerment via robust participation in an inclusive and equitable digital economy at the subnational level.

Socrates Salon on Digital Inclusion

An expert in Socratic moderation will use a series of challenging questions to encourage a robust exchange of ideas among a diverse, cross-sectoral group of participants, including mayoral staffers.

New technologies, ways of work, and models for both public governance and business have the potential to exacerbate existing inclusion challenges – or to help address them. To get the digital transformation of our societies right, it is helpful to start at the beginning, looking back at some of the foundational ideas about belonging with which our societies have long struggled. Over the course of the afternoon, we will seek to apply these ideas to our emerging digital age.

Following the discussion, participants will have the opportunity to share key priorities identified in the discussion with the larger Cities Summit community on Thursday, April 27th at a Plenary Session Shark Tank.
